If you've searched for long-lasting natural dog chews, you've almost certainly come across the Himalayan dog chew. It's one of the most popular natural treats in the world — but few dog owners know what it actually is, where it comes from, or how much the products sold under that name can differ.

Here's what to know before you buy.

The Original: Churpi

The Himalayan style dog chew is based on churpi, a traditional hard cheese made by communities across Nepal and the Himalayan region for more than 2,000 years. Fresh milk — traditionally yak and cow — is curdled with lime juice and salt, pressed into dense blocks, and air-dried until it becomes one of the hardest cheeses in the world.

That hardness is the point. A proper churpi-style chew is worked at slowly, softening gradually as the dog chews. It's a long-lasting, high-protein, low-odour chew — and its entire ingredient list fits in one line: milk, lime juice, salt.

Why "Himalayan" Doesn't Always Mean What You Think

Here's the part most packaging won't tell you: many products sold in Australia as "Himalayan chews" are not made in the Himalayas — and until recently, none were made in Australia either. They're manufactured overseas and imported, often with limited visibility into milk sourcing, processing methods, or quality controls.

That doesn't automatically make them bad products. But it does mean "Himalayan" on a label describes a style, not a source — and the quality behind that label varies widely.

What to Look For in a Quality Milk Chew

When comparing Himalayan-style dog chews, check three things:

1. The ingredient list. A traditional chew needs only milk, lime juice, and salt. Long ingredient lists, added starches, or binders are a sign of a shortcut product.

2. The sourcing. Can the brand tell you where the milk comes from? Traceability is the clearest signal of quality in any dairy product.

3. The processing method. True churpi is air-dried slowly at low temperatures. High-heat baking or extrusion is faster and cheaper, but it produces a different — and typically softer, shorter-lasting — chew.
